Oscars Could be Awarded to AI-Generated Films, Says Academy

According to the organisers, films utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be contenders for major Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced new guidelines on Monday, stating that the use of AI and other digital technologies would not positively or negatively influence the likelihood of receiving a nomination.

Generative AI, capable of producing text, images, audio, and video based on straightforward text prompts, played a role in creating some films that received prestigious industry awards in March. However, the Academy noted that it would still take human participation into account when determining its winners.

The new wording concerning the eligibility of films involving generative AI was suggested by the Academy’s Science and Technology Council.

As part of additional rule modifications made on Monday, Academy members are now required to view all nominated films in each category to participate in the final voting round that determines the winners.

The discussion surrounding AI’s role in filmmaking gained traction after Adrien Brody won the Best Actor award for his performance in The Pianist at this year’s Oscars ceremony in March. The film utilised generative AI to enhance the actor’s Hungarian accent.

Subsequently, it was revealed that similar voice-cloning technology was used to enhance singing voices in the Oscar-winning musical “Emilia.”

The technology’s capability to swiftly adjust or replicate an artist’s tone and style, or make edits such as subtly altering someone’s appearance, has contributed to its rising popularity in both music and film production.

Nevertheless, the use of AI remains a contentious issue, with artists and actors expressing concerns about the materials used to train these tools and their potential implications for their careers.
