Postecoglou Fires Back at Critics After Spurs Secure Europa League Final Spot

Ange Postecoglou fired back at critics following Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Bodo/Glimt on Thursday, which secured their place in the Europa League final with a 5-1 aggregate victory. Despite mounting pressure, Postecoglou’s side will now face Manchester United in the final on May 21 in Bilbao, keeping alive his hopes of ending Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought.

With the first leg won 3-1, the Australian manager faced increasing scrutiny, and any slip-up would have likely cost him his job. But goals from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro in the second half ensured Tottenham’s progression, maintaining Postecoglou’s dream of winning a trophy in his second season, a promise he’s made to himself.

Tottenham’s Premier League struggles have placed Postecoglou under immense pressure, with the club sitting in 16th place. The Europa League title, however, would secure a spot in next season’s Champions League, potentially saving his job despite poor domestic form.

Postecoglou, responding to Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim’s dismissal of the Europa League as a season-saver, firmly defended his team’s ambition: “What do I care what Manchester United think?” he said. “We’ve got a chance, and people are trying to tear it down because they fear it might happen.”

Postecoglou, known for his attacking style, adjusted his tactics for the second leg against Bodo/Glimt, opting for a more cautious approach given the challenging conditions of an artificial pitch in Norway.

“I’m incredibly proud of the lads,” Postecoglou said after the match. “We knew it would be tough, but we fully deserved to win both legs and now we’re in the final.”

Tottenham will go into the final with confidence, having already beaten Manchester United three times this season, including a 4-3 win in the League Cup. Spurs aim to secure their first European title since 1984 and end a long trophy drought.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding his future, Postecoglou remains determined to bring silverware back to Tottenham. “We’ve given the supporters hope, and who knows, we might do something special,” he added.
