Canada in Talks to Join US ‘Golden Dome’ Missile Defence Project

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed on Wednesday that the country is engaged in “high-level” discussions with the United States over potentially joining President Donald Trump’s ambitious “Golden Dome” missile defence initiative.

Speaking at a press conference, Carney confirmed that Ottawa is considering investing in the system, which aims to shield North America from a broad spectrum of modern threats, including ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, cruise missiles, and drones.

“We recognise that we have the option, should we decide, to participate in the Golden Dome through joint investments with the United States. It’s under active consideration and has been discussed at senior levels,” said Carney.

The missile shield is a cornerstone of Trump’s defence agenda in his second term and is intended to be operational within three years. However, the project is expected to encounter both technological hurdles and political resistance.

Carney stressed the importance of preparing for new and evolving missile dangers, including those that could originate from space. “These threats are real and growing, and we take them very seriously,” he said.

Canada and the United States already collaborate on continental defence through the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD), but tensions in bilateral relations have led Canada to reassess its broader security and trade strategies.

As part of a diversification effort, Ottawa recently announced a review of its major procurement of American-made F-35 fighter jets and has entered into an agreement with Australia to develop advanced Arctic radar systems.

Carney also noted that Canada is currently holding discussions with its European partners to become a full member of the “ReArm Europe” initiative—an EU-led programme aimed at strengthening the continent’s defence sector and military capabilities.
