The Nigerian government has announced plans to carry out urgent palliative repairs on deteriorating expansion joints along several bridges on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, following a recent traffic accident linked to structural failure.
The disclosure was made on Saturday by the Lagos Federal Controller of Works, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, during a press briefing.
Her comments followed a serious crash involving an 18-seater commercial bus at Arepo bus stop the day before, which left several passengers with critical injuries.
Kesha attributed the incident to the collapse of an expansion joint on one of the expressway’s bridges. She listed the Kara, Arepo, and Magboro bridges as the most affected and in need of immediate attention.
According to her, the joints have significantly worn down, with some already showing clear signs of failure.

A contractor currently engaged on the expressway has been instructed to commence emergency repair work over the weekend as a temporary measure, pending the start of a full-scale rehabilitation project once formal approvals are in place.
Kesha also raised concerns over the rampant vandalism of public infrastructure, noting that such acts contribute heavily to the deterioration of key structures.
“Some of these failures are the result of vandalism,” she said, calling on Nigerians to treat public assets as shared property and report sabotage to the appropriate authorities.
She expressed sympathy for those affected by accidents caused by the poor state of the road, assuring the public of the government’s commitment to safer highways.
She urged citizens to cooperate with authorities and protect infrastructure from damage.
