Kano Declares Public Holiday to Mourn Athletes Killed in Crash

The Kano State government has announced that Monday will be a public holiday to sympathise with the families of the athletes who lost their lives while returning from the National Sports Festival (NSF).

Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the media spokesperson for Governor Abba Yusuf, shared this information in a statement released on Sunday.

On Saturday, a tragic accident claimed the lives of 22 athletes who were representing Kano at the recently concluded NSF after the bus they were travelling in was involved in a crash. The bus carrying the victims overturned off the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of the state. Many others sustained injuries in the incident.

Yusuf, currently in Saudi Arabia for Hajj, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased athletes. He assured that all necessary measures are being taken to assist the victims and their families.

The 22nd National Sports Festival took place in Ogun from May 18 to 30. Kano ranked 13th in the medal standings with 29 medals, including six gold medals.
