Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti defeated American Frances Tiafoe in four sets on Tuesday to advance to the semi-finals of the French Open.
The eighth-seeded Musetti claimed a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win against the 15th-seeded player after a contest lasting more than two hours and 45 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. He will face either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul for a chance to compete in the final.
Musetti’s serve was a crucial factor in his success. He delivered eight aces and had an impressive 81 per cent win rate on his first serve in windy conditions in Paris.
He also managed to fend off two of the three break points created by Tiafoe, who committed 51 unforced errors compared to Musetti’s 32.
Musetti has been in outstanding form on clay this season, making it to the last four in all three major warm-up tournaments leading up to the French Open.
For both Musetti and world number 16 Tiafoe—who has reached the US Open semi-finals twice—it marked their first appearance in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
