Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, confirmed on Tuesday that he turned down a significant offer from Saudi Arabia to remain at the club, stating that he wishes to “continue playing at the highest level.”
Speaking to the media while at a Portugal training camp ahead of Wednesday’s Nations League semi-final against Germany in Munich, Fernandes acknowledged that he received an “exciting offer” from Al Hilal but prefers to be a part of Ruben Amorim’s rebuilding effort at Old Trafford.
“The president of Al Hilal called me and asked me if I wanted to move there,” Fernandes confirmed, saying the club “waited for me to think about my future”.
“I talked to the gaffer and he asked me not to go,” Fernandes revealed, adding: “Man United said they didn’t want to sell me.
“They said if I wanted to go I could but they didn’t need the money.”
According to reports, Al Hilal was prepared to pay United up to £100 million ($135 million) for the 30-year-old Portugal international.

United had a disappointing season, finishing 15th, which marked their worst performance in the Premier League era. They also lost the Europa League final against Tottenham.
As the United captain, Fernandes was among the few players to gain positive recognition during a troubled season, netting 19 goals and providing 19 assists in all competitions.
The club is anticipated to be active in the transfer market as Amorim seeks to overhaul his underperforming squad. Already, the team has signed Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves and is reportedly interested in Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.
Potential departures may involve Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho.
Since his £47 million transfer from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, Fernandes has made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals for United.
