Barcelona Sign Espanyol Keeper Joan Garcia in £22.2 Million Deal

Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday that they have completed the signing of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia in a deal worth £22.2 million, with the 24-year-old agreeing to a six-year contract.

Garcia, who came through the ranks at Espanyol after joining them as a teenager, impressed last season by keeping eight clean sheets in 38 appearances. His consistent performances played a vital role in helping Espanyol avoid relegation.

The move makes Garcia Barcelona’s first acquisition of the summer transfer window, as Hansi Flick’s squad look to build on a successful campaign that saw them claim four trophies, including the La Liga title.

“Following an excellent La Liga campaign, where he was instrumental in Espanyol’s survival, Joan Garcia attracted attention from leading clubs across the globe,” Barcelona stated. “At only 24, his outstanding displays and significant potential made him a priority target for us.”

On Tuesday, Garcia posted a farewell message to Espanyol supporters via social media. In the video, he acknowledged that some may find his decision difficult to accept.

“I know this decision may not be easy for everyone to understand,” Garcia said. “I don’t ask you to. But I want you to know that it was a carefully considered decision, taking into account my career, the club, my family, and myself.”

Garcia will now vie for the number one position at Barcelona, competing with Germany’s Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Poland’s Wojciech Szczesny, and Spaniard Inaki Pena for the starting spot next season.
