Explosions Rock Kyiv During Overnight Drone Attack

Kyiv officials reported early Monday that the Ukrainian capital was facing yet another large-scale drone assault by Russian forces, leaving at least one person injured.

AFP correspondents in the city described hearing loud blasts as the attack unfolded.

“A new massive attack on the capital is underway, potentially involving multiple waves of enemy drones,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, in a statement. He urged residents to remain in shelters until the threat had passed.

In the heart of Kyiv, AFP journalists reported hearing the distinctive buzzing of drones overhead, followed by loud explosions, which appeared to be from the city’s air-defence systems engaging the incoming threats. Gunfire was also heard, likely from mobile air-defence teams attempting to shoot down the drones.

Explosions Rock Kyiv During Overnight Drone Attack

In one basement shelter beneath a residential building in central Kyiv, around 10 people took refuge as the strikes continued. Some sat scrolling through their phones for updates, while a woman and her child lay asleep on folding beds set up for the night.

The latest attack highlights the continued vulnerability of Kyiv to aerial assaults, despite months of efforts to bolster Ukraine’s air-defence capabilities.
