Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly ordered an immediate halt to his country’s cooperation with the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The decision comes in the wake of recent U.S. airstrikes targeting key nuclear sites in Iran.
According to state media reports on Wednesday, the suspension is in line with a law previously passed by Iran’s parliament, which called for ending collaboration with the agency.
That law, designed to limit international oversight of Iran’s nuclear programme in certain circumstances, had already been approved by the country’s constitutional watchdog.
The decision has sparked renewed worries over transparency around Iran’s nuclear activities. For now, it remains uncertain how the IAEA will respond, or what the pause in cooperation will mean for its ability to monitor Iran’s nuclear sites.
The Geneva-based agency has not yet issued any official statement on the development.
