At least 11 people have been killed and 18 others injured after a suspected suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a security checkpoint in northern Pakistan, police and rescue officials said on Saturday.
The checkpoint, jointly operated by police, military and customs personnel, was attacked around midday in the Dera Ismail Khan area, according to police official Saifullah Khan.
Khan said the attacker rammed the vehicle into the checkpoint, causing the blast that killed 11 people.
“A suspected suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the checkpoint, killing 11 people,” he said.
Bilal Faizi of the 1122 rescue service confirmed that 11 bodies had been recovered and 18 people injured in what he described as a militant attack.
No group had immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing.
The attack follows another deadly incident earlier this month in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where at least 31 people, including 16 police officers, were killed in an explosion and gun attack at a police headquarters in Kohat.
Pakistan has blamed the rise in attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighbouring Balochistan on militants operating from Afghanistan.
Afghanistan’s Taliban government has denied involvement.
The accusations have deepened tensions between the two countries and contributed to armed clashes, with Pakistan carrying out airstrikes on Afghan territory that it says target militant positions.
