Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy stated Monday that the emotional significance of competing in this week’s British Open at Royal Portrush, his home course, will not deter him from challenging for the title.

This marks McIlroy’s second appearance in the Open in his native Northern Ireland, following the 2019 tournament at the same links where he famously shot a course record 61 as a 16-year-old.

In 2019, the world number two admitted he struggled with the intense local support, missing the cut by a single stroke.

“I remember the ovation I got on the first tee… and not being ready for how I was going to feel,” the 36-year-old explained, adding that the overwhelming desire from fans for him to win created internal pressure and a fear of letting people down.

He quickly learned that controlling his emotions is a key challenge, especially in such a high-profile week. Unlike 2019, when he tried to “isolate,” McIlroy now believes it’s better to “embrace” the adulation.

Renewed Focus After Grand Slam and Strong Scottish Open Finish

Following his dramatic Masters victory in April, which completed his career Grand Slam as only the sixth man to win all four majors, McIlroy has spoken of struggling with motivation.

However, he is now optimistic that his recent joint-second-place finish at the Scottish Open will serve as a springboard for a strong performance at Royal Portrush.

“I’m certainly encouraged by how I’ve played the last two starts, especially last week in Scotland,” McIlroy said.

He attributed this renewed form to a two-week break after the Travellers Championship, which allowed him to “reset” and enjoy a “change of scenery.”

He expressed confidence in his current game, feeling that last week’s performance positioned him well for the Open.
