Hunger Surges in Africa Despite Global Decline

While global hunger is beginning to decline, a new United Nations report reveals a troubling rise in hunger across Africa. The report estimates that by the end of the decade, 512 million people worldwide will remain undernourished — with Africa accounting for 60% of that total.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, speaking via video at the African Union’s Global Food Systems Summit in Ethiopia, issued a strong warning. He stated that food must never be used “as a weapon of war,” and urged immediate action to tackle the worsening hunger crisis on the continent.

The statistics are stark: over 280 million people across Africa are currently malnourished. African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf identified conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability as the primary causes of growing food insecurity.

“Fifty-two million Africans face food insecurity, and nearly 3.4 million are on the brink of famine,” Youssouf said.

Throughout the summit, leaders called for greater investment in agriculture, climate adaptation, and social protection to reverse the trend. Without urgent and collective intervention, the report warns that Africa could soon host half of the world’s undernourished population.
