Peru Issues Tsunami Alert After Pacific Quake

Peru has issued a tsunami alert in response to a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off Russia’s eastern coastline near the Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, according to the country’s Navy.

The National Tsunami Warning Centre triggered the alert after analysing data from the seismic event, warning of potential tsunami activity along Peru’s coastline.

The Navy’s Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation confirmed via social media platform X that the situation is being closely monitored.

Peru’s National Civil Defence Institute also stated on X that its emergency operations team is keeping a close watch on coastal regions as a precaution.

Hernando Tavera, head of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, told AFP that the resulting tsunami is forecast to reach the Peruvian coast by Wednesday morning. He noted that waves are not expected to exceed three metres in height.

The undersea earthquake off Russia has caused injuries and prompted widespread tsunami alerts across the Pacific, including in countries such as Japan and the United States, particularly Hawaii.
