Following a recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated his commitment to an “early and peaceful” end to the war.
This conversation took place shortly after Modi had a similar call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which he also advocated for a peaceful resolution.
India has long maintained diplomatic ties with Moscow and has avoided officially condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Instead, it has positioned itself as a potential intermediary in the conflict.
While Russia and the United States are set to hold a summit in Alaska to discuss the war, there is uncertainty about whether it will lead to a ceasefire, as previous negotiations have failed.
Tens of thousands have been killed and millions displaced since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
