A collision between a yacht and a cargo ship off the coast of southern Japan on Wednesday has left one person dead and several others missing.

The captain of a 492-tonne gravel carrier reported the incident to the Japan Coast Guard, which has confirmed that a 70-year-old man was recovered from the water and later died.

Based on the report that there were several people on the yacht, the coast guard has launched a search and rescue operation involving six vessels and a plane to find the missing individuals.
