Nigeria and the United Kingdom have agreed to strengthen cooperation across trade, economic development, defence, and migration, following a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Vice President Kashim Shettima met with the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy to discuss deepening ties between the two countries. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing mutual interests and expanding collaboration in key sectors.

Later the same day, Shettima attended the Global Leadership Council Meeting at UNICEF Headquarters, where he highlighted Nigeria’s focus on digital opportunities to engage young people and empower women and girls. The gathering brought together world leaders, business executives, UN agency heads, civil society advocates and youth representatives to explore innovative solutions to global challenges.

“We are poised to seize opportunities in the digital space to engage our youth and, most importantly, to empower our women, because they are the backbone of our society,” Shettima said. He stressed that inclusivity remains central to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, noting the prominent roles young Nigerians occupy in government.
