The fate of the iconic San Siro stadium will be decided on Monday as Milan city councillors hold a crucial vote on whether to sell the site to football giants Inter Milan and AC Milan for €197 million ($230 million).

If approved, the sale would allow the clubs to build a new 71,500-capacity stadium on the adjacent land.

The current San Siro would then be almost entirely demolished to make way for a new park, offices, and entertainment facilities, designed by Foster and Partners and MANICA.

The vote is extremely tight and critical because the sale must be completed this month to avoid a public building protection order on the stadium’s second tier from taking effect in November, which would prevent the demolition plan.

The clubs proposed the land purchase after a previous project, which kept the land public, stalled for three years.

Mayor Giuseppe Sala’s government supports the sale, but some councillors are set to vote against it, arguing the city would be “blindly” selling the public land without a detailed redevelopment plan.

Inter Milan’s CEO has warned that if the sale is blocked, both clubs would be “forced to leave Milan”, potentially jeopardising the city’s ability to host matches for the Euro 2032 tournament, as the current San Siro no longer meets UEFA requirements for major events.
