The Nigerian government assured Nigerians on Sunday that they would not experience any disruption in the supply of refined petroleum products, despite concerns over the naira-for-crude oil arrangement and conflicts involving the Dangote Refinery.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Finance after a meeting of the Steering Committee on the Domestic Crude Oil and Refined Products Sales in Local Currency Initiative, the government reiterated that energy security and stability in the downstream sector remained a top priority.

The committee, chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, said recent reports of a suspension of the naira-for-crude deal by Dangote Refinery had been “amicably resolved.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the committee reassures that the crude oil-for-naira initiative will continue,” the statement read.

“It also assured that all outstanding issues — particularly the dispute between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Dangote Refinery — are being addressed with urgency and in good faith.”

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, who chairs the technical committee; as well as representatives of the NNPCL, NMDPRA, CBN, Afreximbank, and the Dangote Refinery.

The government emphasised that Nigerians should not expect scarcity or price instability, stressing that it remained “fully committed to ensuring energy security, protecting consumers, and maintaining stability in the domestic petroleum products market.”

The committee’s intervention followed public concerns that a suspension of the naira-for-crude deal and an ongoing labour dispute might trigger another fuel crisis.

However, Dangote Refinery has now resumed fuel sales in naira. In a memo to marketers on Saturday, the company attributed the decision to the intervention of the naira-for-crude technical committee.

“Following the intervention of the Naira-for-Crude Technical Committee Chairman, we are pleased to inform you of the resumption of PMS sales in naira commencing immediately,” the memo stated. “You may proceed to place your orders in naira for both self-collection and free delivery of PMS to designated locations nationwide.”

This came after the refinery had earlier announced a temporary suspension of petrol sales in naira from Sunday, September 28, 2025, citing the exhaustion of its crude-for-naira allocation.

The latest development is expected to reassure the public and stabilise fuel distribution, as both government and industry stakeholders work to resolve labour and operational challenges.
