Terrorists from the Lakurawa sect have reportedly killed four soldiers after invading Kebbe town in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Friday.
At around 10 a.m., more than 300 terrorists, riding motorcycles, attacked security forces and raided shops, a hospital and vehicles in the town.
Soldiers stationed at a military base attempted to repel the terrorists.
Bashar Altine, a security expert in Sokoto, however, said four soldiers were feared killed during the exchange of fire.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria had not confirmed the reported deaths at the time of publication.
The spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmed Rufai, also confirmed the attack, telling Punch that the command was still gathering information.
Altine said the militants moved into the centre of Kebbe, particularly the Sabon Gari area, where they reportedly broke into shops and carted away large quantities of mobile phones and bread after engaging the soldiers.
He said the assailants also opened fire on a military vehicle fitted with a mounted rocket-propelled grenade, damaging three of its tyres and shattering its windscreen.
The terrorists allegedly smashed the windows of vehicles parked within the premises, including a vehicle belonging to the Divisional Police Officer and an ambulance.
“They also seized mobile phones belonging to patients at the hospital,” Altine added.
He further alleged that the militants took away four motorcycles belonging to residents as they withdrew from the town.
According to him, the attackers eventually left Kebbe in the evening, heading toward the police station and then toward communities west of the town.
