The Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Board, with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has delivered critical health and related services to the people of Kwarau, Gari Ward in Igabi Local Government Area.

The outreach was carried out in an area where residents often travel over 10 kilometres to reach the nearest health facility.

UNICEF’s Deputy Coordinator in New York, Anne Carlson, said on Friday that the outreach offered malnutrition screening, immunisation, birth registration, and a range of other essential health services.

These services are part of a joint effort involving the Kaduna government and various partner organisations, with a focus on young children and their families.

Dr Gerida Birukila, Chief of the UNICEF Field Office in Kaduna, noted the particular importance of reaching underserved and hard-to-reach communities such as Kwarau.

She emphasised that mobile outreach efforts like these help bring lifesaving interventions (like immunisations) closer to those who would otherwise miss them.

Aisha Idris, the Local Immunisation Officer for Igabi LGA, stated that this phase of the outreach especially targeted “zero-dose” children aged 0-11 months—those who have not yet received basic immunisations.

The project also provided Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) for children suffering from malnutrition and iron folate supplements for pregnant women.

The Village Head of Kwarau, Alhaji Umaru Rufa’i, thanked UNICEF and the Kaduna State government for choosing his community for the intervention.

He acknowledged the health challenges in rural areas, from diseases to limited access to medical help, saying that any form of medical outreach is welcome.

Officials believe that bringing healthcare services closer to communities like Kwarau not only improves health outcomes but also helps reduce the burden on families who otherwise must make long journeys to clinics.
