Two Air Peace Passengers Charged for Flight Chaos

Two passengers are to be arraigned by the Airport Police Command in Lagos for alleged unruly behaviour aboard an Air Peace flight that triggered panic among travellers and disrupted flight operations.

The suspects, identified as 51-year-old Enaruna Prince Aghama and 43-year-old Tony Ajayi, were handed over to officers of the International Airport Police Division by Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel after the aircraft arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja.

According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that the incident occurred at about 7:44 p.m. on July 9, 2026, during an Air Peace flight from South Africa to Lagos. The suspects allegedly lit and smoked cigarettes inside the aircraft, activating the plane’s smoke detection and emergency alarm systems.

The activation of the alarm reportedly caused anxiety among passengers and cabin crew, necessitating intervention by airline personnel.

Further investigations revealed that the suspects were also allegedly in possession of alcoholic beverages and became uncooperative and verbally aggressive when cabin crew members attempted to calm the situation and enforce aviation safety regulations.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, condemned the alleged actions, describing any behaviour that threatens aviation safety or disrupts the smooth operation of aircraft as unacceptable.

She said the command remains committed to enforcing aviation security laws and protecting passengers, crew members, and airport users in line with relevant aviation regulations and the FAAN By-Laws.

“Maintaining discipline and orderly conduct aboard aircraft is a shared responsibility essential to safe air travel,” CP Olufunke said, while urging passengers to comply with lawful instructions from airline operators and aviation officials.

The police said the suspects will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction upon completion of the investigations.

The Airport Police Command has also warned travellers against actions that could compromise aviation safety, noting that disruptive behaviour aboard aircraft carries legal consequences.
