Former Liverpool and Australia star Harry Kewell has been unveiled as the new head coach of Vietnamese top-flight club Hanoi FC.
The 47-year-old, who made his name as a winger at Leeds United before five years at Anfield, has endured a difficult coaching career so far.
He was dismissed by the Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos in July 2024 after just half a season in charge, following previous stints in English lower-league football with Crawley Town, Notts County and Oldham Athletic.
Kewell also managed National League outfit Barnet in 2021 but was sacked without registering a victory in seven matches.
Despite his managerial struggles, Hanoi FC hailed Kewell’s arrival as a coup for Vietnamese football. “Harry Kewell, a big name who was once famous in the Premier League and competed in the World Cup, came to Hanoi, which is also a testament to the attraction and aspiration of Hanoi Football Club,” the club said in a statement.
Kewell, who also had spells with Galatasaray in Turkey and Melbourne Victory in his native Australia, now faces the challenge of revitalising Hanoi’s campaign in Vietnam’s V.League 1.
