Swedish activist Greta Thunberg will be among more than 70 people of various nationalities leaving Israel on Monday after being detained aboard an intercepted Gaza aid flotilla.

Most of those being released are expected to fly to Greece, from where they can continue their journeys home, according to statements from their respective governments.

Among those departing are 28 French, 27 Greek, 15 Italian, and nine Swedish nationals. Separately, 21 Spaniards returned to Spain on Sunday, though several foreigners, including 28 Spaniards, remain in Israeli custody.

All those detained had been aboard the 45-vessel Global Sumud Flotilla, which sought to deliver aid to Gaza amid warnings from the United Nations about famine.

Israel began intercepting the flotilla in international waters on Wednesday, preventing the more than 400 passengers from reaching Palestinian territory.

Italian and Greek authorities confirmed that their nationals will fly from Israel to Athens on Monday, with Italy assisting with onward travel to Italy.

France stated that its 28 citizens will also be flown to Greece, while Swedish media reported that the nine Swedes are likely to follow the same route.

Some detainees have described degrading treatment by Israeli authorities.

Several Italians in an earlier group reported physical abuse, with journalist Saverio Tommasi saying he was struck on the back and head, describing the ordeal as being “treated like old monkeys in the worst circuses of the 1920s.”

Rafael Borrego, one of the returning Spaniards, said detainees had endured repeated physical and psychological abuse, including being forced to the ground.

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard confirmed that embassy staff had visited the detained Swedes in Tel Aviv and were informed on Sunday that their release would be authorised for Monday.
