Tributes have poured in for Turkish journalist Hakan Tosun, 50, who died Monday after being attacked in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district. Tosun, known for his reporting on environmental issues, urban activism, and gentrification, was found unconscious early Saturday and rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
CCTV footage showed two assailants attacking Tosun, and police have arrested two men, aged 18 and 24, in connection with the assault. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Media organisations, NGOs, and politicians have condemned the assault and called for a full investigation. The Association of Progressive Journalists said attacks on reporters have “become commonplace” in Turkey, demanding accountability. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) echoed the call, urging authorities to clarify the motive and deliver the “harshest punishment” for those responsible.
Environmental groups and political figures also stressed the importance of investigating Tosun’s death. Burhanettin Bulut, deputy head of the main opposition CHP party, described the attack as “unacceptable and despicable,” noting it targeted not only a journalist but also press freedom and the right to information. The pro-Kurdish DEM party highlighted the necessity of probing the case to protect journalism and uphold the right to life.
