A Kano State High Court has sentenced a football coach, Hayatu Muhammad, to eight years in prison for sodomising one of his minor players.

Justice Musa Dahuru Muhammad, who presided over the case, delivered the judgment on Wednesday, ruling that the convict, a resident of Sanka in Dala Local Government Area, was guilty of committing the act twice in different locations.

The convict initially pleaded not guilty, but the prosecution, led by state counsel Ibrahim Arif Garba, called five witnesses whose testimonies proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

In his defence, the coach testified as the sole witness.

After reviewing the evidence, Justice Dahuru found him guilty of violating Section 284 of the Penal Code Law.

He sentenced the convict to four years’ imprisonment on each of the two counts, to run concurrently, without the option of a fine. The sentence takes effect from the date of the judgment.
