The Swedish Football Association (FA) announced on Monday the appointment of Graham Potter, the former manager of Chelsea and West Ham, as the new head coach of the national team.
Potter replaces Jon Dahl Tomasson, whose contract was terminated last week following a disastrous start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where Sweden secured only one point from their first four games and sits at the bottom of Group B.
Potter’s primary mandate is to immediately turn around the team’s performance, which has failed to score in its last three matches, and secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The 50-year-old manager, who previously worked in Sweden with Ostersund FK, expressed humility and inspiration for the challenge, noting the country possesses “fantastic players” like star strikers Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.
The contract covers the remaining qualifying matches, including November games against Switzerland and Slovenia and a potential playoff in March.
If the team successfully qualifies for the World Cup finals, the contract will be automatically extended.
Potter joins the national team job following difficult spells at Premier League clubs Chelsea (sacked April 2023) and West Ham (sacked September).
