Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles at home deepened on Sunday as Aston Villa came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, thanks to goals from Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia.

Rodrigo Bentancur had given Thomas Frank’s side an early lead, but Villa fought back impressively to hand Spurs yet another setback in front of their fans.

Tottenham’s Premier League home record continues to haunt them — with 11 defeats and only three wins in their last 18 league matches — leaving Frank searching for consistency since replacing Ange Postecoglou in the summer.

The defeat, which ended Tottenham’s seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions, leaves them sixth in the table. Frank admitted it was a tight game that could have gone either way, but credited Villa for making the most of their chances.

“It was exactly the game I expected — very close, not many clear opportunities,” he said. “They scored two brilliant goals from outside the box. Fair play to them, but I think a draw would have been fair.”

For Unai Emery’s side, it was another sign of momentum after a difficult start to the season.

Villa have now won five consecutive games across all competitions and are unbeaten in eight, climbing to 10th place as they begin to reassert themselves in the race for European qualification.

“The way we responded after going behind shows the character of this team,” Emery said. “We’re improving, and having some key players back has made a big difference.”

Tottenham’s preparations were dealt a blow when captain Cristian Romero was injured in the warm-up, adding to an already lengthy injury list that includes James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma, Destiny Udogie, and Dominic Solanke.

Despite that, Spurs made a strong start and went ahead after just five minutes when Mohammed Kudus crossed for Micky van de Ven to head the ball into Bentancur’s path.

The midfielder coolly slotted home from close range before celebrating by tucking the ball under his shirt in honour of his pregnant wife.

However, Villa stunningly drew level in the 37th minute. Rogers collected the ball 20 yards out and unleashed a curling effort that flew past Guglielmo Vicario into the top corner — his first goal of the season and one worthy of any highlight reel.

Tottenham had chances to regain the lead after the break, but Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez twice denied Joao Palhinha, while Ezri Konsa blocked a fierce effort from Wilson Odobert.

Spurs’ evening worsened when Mathys Tel was forced off with a knee injury, compounding their growing fitness crisis.

Villa seized their moment with just over 10 minutes remaining. Matty Cash’s cross-field pass found Lucas Digne, who rolled the ball across to Buendia.

The Argentine substitute made no mistake, curling a precise finish into the bottom corner to complete the turnaround.

Randal Kolo Muani could have salvaged a point for Spurs deep into stoppage time, but the debutant blazed over from close range, leaving Frank’s men to rue another frustrating night at home.
