Iran has executed a person accused of spying for Israel, according to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency, which cited an Iranian prosecutor on Sunday, Reuters reports. The individual was alleged to have ties with Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, and to have leaked classified information.
Iran, which has been locked in a decades-long shadow conflict with Israel, has carried out numerous executions of people it accuses of collaborating with Israeli intelligence or aiding its operations within the country.
The execution came following heightened tensions in Iran’s southeast following a series of deadly attacks. In response, the government has enacted tougher legislation imposing harsher punishments on individuals convicted of spying for Israel or the United States.
The law, which took effect on Wednesday, increases prison terms and possible sentences for espionage offences involving “hostile governments”, particularly those related to Israel and the US, according to Iranian media.
In a separate development, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Sunday that at least four people were killed in attacks in Sistan-Baluchestan Province. The IRGC blamed “groups affiliated with Israel” for the incidents, which occurred on unspecified dates.
The IRGC’s official outlet, Siba News, published a statement accusing “mercenary groups linked to the Israeli regime” of killing “several Sunni tribal leaders.” Sistan-Baluchestan, one of Iran’s poorest and most volatile regions, borders Pakistan and Afghanistan and is home to a large Sunni Baluch population, in contrast to the country’s Shia Muslim majority. The province has long been the scene of violence involving Baluchi separatists, Sunni militants, and drug traffickers. Iranian authorities often accuse armed groups in the region of having connections to Israel.
