The newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has committed to rebuilding trust and confidence in the nation’s electoral system, referring to his appointment as a “divine” opportunity to serve the country.

After his inauguration by the President at the State House on Thursday, Amupitan stated that his mission was to ensure free, fair, and credible elections while advancing democratic principles nationwide.

“Our mandate is clear, and what is it? To deliver free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian people. To achieve this, we must work together as a team,” he said.

In his first official meeting with the commission’s directors, he emphasised that the success of INEC’s objectives would depend on collaboration, discipline, and integrity within the organisation. 

While addressing INEC staff and directors, he promised to maintain the highest levels of transparency and accountability. 

“As we mark the beginning of the new chapter, I want to assure you of my commitment to upholding the highest standard of integrity, transparency, and discipline in all our operations,” he said.

He added that he will prioritise staff welfare, recognising that the commission’s workforce is crucial to achieving credible elections.
