Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, have suffered their second consecutive loss at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, leaving their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
The young Nigerian side fell 2–0 to Brazil in a hard-fought Group A encounter, following their earlier defeat to the host nation in the tournament opener.
Despite showing flashes of determination, the Flamingos struggled to contain the attacking flair of the South Americans, who capitalised on defensive lapses to secure victory.
Brazil’s forward Gabriele opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a precise finish after a swift counterattack, while substitute Lorrany sealed the win with a powerful strike midway through the second half.
Nigeria’s attempts to stage a comeback were repeatedly thwarted by Brazil’s disciplined defence and the heroics of their goalkeeper.

Coach Bankole Olowookere praised his players for their resilience but admitted that costly mistakes proved decisive. He expressed optimism that the team could still bounce back in their final group fixture, urging the girls to remain focused and disciplined.
“We came up against a technically strong side, and while the result is disappointing, the experience is invaluable for the players,” Olowookere said.
“We must correct our errors quickly and give everything in the next match.”
The defeat leaves Nigeria at the bottom of Group A with no points from two matches, while Brazil and the Dominican Republic sit atop the table.
The Flamingos will now need a convincing win in their last group game and favourable results elsewhere to stand a chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
Football analysts have called for better finishing and composure in front of goal as key areas for improvement if Nigeria hopes to progress.
