UK Jails Nigerian Student for Rape

A Nigerian postgraduate student living in the United Kingdom, Chiemka Okoronta, will be deported after completing a ten-year prison sentence for raping a teenage girl.

According to a BBC report on Monday, the assault occurred after the victim became stranded on a night bus in West Yorkshire. Both Okoronta and the teenager were passengers on a service that stopped unexpectedly in Morley, Leeds, while they were both travelling to Bradford on March 25.

The 29-year-old student allegedly deceived the girl into sharing a taxi before luring her to his accommodation, where he locked her in a toilet and attacked her.

The court ordered that Okoronta, originally from Nigeria, must also serve three years on an extended licence and remain on the sex offenders register for life. Prosecutors told the Bradford Crown Court that the victim’s phone battery had died, leaving her stranded. Okoronta then offered to share a taxi but diverted it to his flat instead. After the assault, the teenager escaped, sought help from a passerby, and contacted the police.

Judge Sophie McKone condemned the act, saying Okoronta had deliberately planned the assault.

“When you offered her a taxi ride, you had already formed a plan to take her back to your flat to rape her. You concocted a reason to bring her inside. You are a dangerous sexual predator,” she said.

Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe of West Yorkshire Police praised the victim’s courage, urging other survivors of sexual assault to report incidents promptly.

“The victim’s bravery in coming forward is commendable. We encourage anyone who has suffered a sexual offence to contact us so we can take action,” she said.

In a related 2024 case, Timilehin Olatunji, another Nigerian, was sentenced to ten years in prison after his victim used a phone app to record audio evidence of his attack.
