Ethiopia’s Afar region reported late Wednesday that it is under attack by forces from the neighbouring Tigray region.
The Afar administration claims the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has forcibly occupied six villages, bombarding civilians with heavy weapons and mortars.
This incident highlights the continued high tensions in the country following the devastating 2020-2022 civil war between the central government and Tigrayan rebels, which resulted in an estimated 600,000 deaths.
Afar warned it would take “defensive duty” if the attacks persist.

Separately, the central government has accused the TPLF of preparing for war and diverting funds away from civilian needs toward military uses, worsening conditions in the Tigray region, where many remain displaced.
The TPLF has not commented on the recent Afar allegations.
