Tinubu Retains Marwa as NDLEA Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has renewed Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa’s (rtd) appointment as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for an additional five years, as confirmed by the State House on Friday.

Marwa, who initially took on the role in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, will continue to lead the agency until 2031.

Before his current position at the NDLEA, he served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 until December 2020.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced in a statement on Thursday.

The statement noted that Marwa possesses extensive experience in this position.

A graduate of both the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973 and has held positions such as brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, and academic registrar at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

He also worked internationally as the Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, and as Defence Adviser to the Nigerian Permanent Mission at the United Nations.

Marwa is well-educated, having earned two postgraduate degrees: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.

Tinubu praised Marwa’s achievements, stating: “Your reappointment is a testament to your tireless efforts to eradicate drug trafficking and drug abuse within our nation.”

According to the State House statement, the renewed appointment signifies that the Adamawa-born former military officer will lead the NDLEA through to 2031.
