Four Dead in Russian Attack on Kyiv

A Russian attack overnight, mainly targeting the capital Kyiv, killed four people and damaged buildings across the city, Ukrainian authorities said Friday.

Ukraine’s capital Kyiv came under what officials described as a “massive” assault early on Friday, with the city’s mayor, Vitaly Klitschko, confirming that air defence units were fully engaged as explosions echoed across the Ukrainian capital.

“This was a deliberately calculated attack aimed at causing maximum harm to people and civilian infrastructure,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

The attack killed four, Zelensky said, and wounded dozens, including a pregnant woman. Zelensky added that Russia had launched around 430 drones and 18 missiles in the attack.

A blaze broke out on the roof of a five-storey residential block in the Solomyansky district, while emergency services received multiple calls for medical assistance in the Desnyansky and Shevchenkivsky districts, according to the mayor. Another residential building in the Podilsky district was also reported to be on fire.

Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has intensified its strikes on Kyiv in recent months.

These attacks have increasingly targeted energy infrastructure, railway networks and civilian neighbourhoods, contributing to a severe escalation in the capital’s vulnerability.
