Decorated defensive midfielder Fernandinho has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, stating he has achieved all his goals in the sport.

“There’s nothing left to motivate me in football,” he told reporters, indicating his desire to focus on his family.

Fernandinho’s 23-year career saw him win a remarkable 11 league titles across Europe: five with Manchester City and six with Shakhtar Donetsk.

He began and ended his journey with Athletico Paranaense in Curitiba, Brazil.

After eight seasons in Ukraine with Shakhtar, he moved to Manchester City in 2013, where he spent nine seasons before returning to his original club in 2022.

On the international stage, Fernandinho earned 53 senior caps for Brazil and was part of the squad that won the Copa America in 2019.
