Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has commissioned new infrastructure in Abuja’s designated mechanic and trailer district, saying the project fulfils a long-standing commitment under the Abuja Master Plan to relocate informal-sector operators from major roads.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Wike said successive administrations had promised to move truck owners, trailer operators and mechanics to a dedicated location but had failed to complete the process.
“One thing that is very clear was that every government had come and promised, based on the master plan of Abuja, that a port-trailers, mechanic association, where they are long there, will be moved to this particular district,” Wike said.
He said the infrastructure project, awarded in November last year, was designed to provide the facilities needed for the operators’ relocation, adding that the government had delivered on its commitment within months.
“Just last year, November, this contract was awarded on providing infrastructure that will enable governments to move their port-trailers and mechanical station here. This has been fulfilled November till now,” he said.
Wike also said ongoing projects in the FCT would be completed before the end of President Bola Tinubu’s tenure, including a planned 10-kilometre footpath.
“We believe, by the grace of God, before the end of the tenure of Mr. President, the footpath, which is about 10 kilometers, will be completed for the use of our people,” he said.
The minister thanked President Tinubu and members of the National Assembly for their support, while urging the relocated operators to make use of the new facilities.
