Lille midfielder Ethan Mbappe proved the difference on Friday night as the club edged out Marseille to block their climb to the top of Ligue 1, scoring the decisive goal in a tight contest at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The younger brother of France captain Kylian Mbappe struck early, punishing a costly error from Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli just 10 minutes into the match.
Collecting a long pass from Nabil Bentaleb, Mbappe capitalised when Rulli rushed off his line, calmly slotting the ball into the empty net for his second league goal of the season following an earlier strike against Paris Saint-Germain.
Lille dominated the opening period but had to withstand heavy pressure after the interval, with goalkeeper Berke Ozer emerging as the hero during Marseille’s late surge.

The Turkish shot-stopper produced two sharp saves to deny Mason Greenwood and Geoffrey Kondogbia, preserving a priceless victory for his side.
Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi did not hold back in criticising his team’s display, expressing disbelief at their lack of intensity and cohesion.
He admitted he had not anticipated such a disappointing showing, lamenting his players’ failure to win second balls, build passing sequences or impose themselves physically.
The setback leaves Marseille in third place in the league standings, level on points with Lille but ahead on goal difference.
They now trail leaders Lens by two points ahead of Saturday’s clash in Nantes, while second-placed Paris Saint-Germain are set to welcome Rennes.
