The Ogun State government has directed metal recycling firms in Ogijo, Sagamu to upgrade their operations with modern technology by March 31, 2026, or face strict penalties.

The warning aims to prevent environmental hazards in the community, following concerns over lead contamination.

The state had previously imposed a temporary ban on lead ingot exports and closed seven lead-acid battery recycling plants in Ogijo after reports of possible lead poisoning surfaced.

Kehinde Bello, General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), told a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday that failure to comply would result in severe sanctions, including permanent closure of non-compliant industries.

“Retrofitting operations with advanced technologies will stop pollution from obsolete equipment, which continues to harm local communities,” Bello said.

He emphasised that previous administrations had already introduced penalties, stop-work orders, and facility closures over the past 15 years to encourage compliance.

Bello added that the state will not entertain requests to extend the deadline, urging community leaders to support the government in restoring a safe and healthy environment for Ogijo and the surrounding areas.
