South African police have arrested four traffic officers over the fatal shooting of a Nigerian man during a traffic operation on a highway in the country’s North West Province, authorities said.

The victim, identified as 37-year-old Osinakachukwu Marcus Onu, was shot dead in the early hours of Wednesday on the N12 highway in Klerksdorp, according to South African local media reports.

His vehicle was later found stalled in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the highway.

Police said the officers involved had left the scene by the time other law enforcement officers arrived.

Preliminary investigations later led detectives to trace and arrest the suspects at a location in Klerksdorp. Their service firearms were seized and are expected to undergo ballistic testing as part of the investigation.
