An Israeli news outlet, Natsiv Net, has reported that Egypt may be reconsidering its 1979 peace treaty with Israel amid shifting geopolitical dynamics across the region.
The Hebrew-language website reported that the development comes as speculation grows over a possible visit by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to Washington.
However, sources described as well-informed have denied suggestions that the Egyptian leader intends to meet Israel’s prime minister during any trip to the US capital.
According to the report, Israeli intelligence has been monitoring what it describes as an expanded deployment of advanced Egyptian air defence systems in the Sinai Peninsula.
These are said to include the Chinese-made HQ-9B system, which Natsiv characterised as a clear breach of the peace treaty, under which Egypt’s military presence in Sinai is subject to strict limitations.
The report added that Egyptian authorities justify the measures as necessary to bolster defensive capabilities in northern Sinai and safeguard national airspace, even if such steps conflict with long-standing treaty obligations.
Natsiv further claimed that the military build-up has been unfolding over several years rather than being a recent development.
It is alleged that the actions have drawn little concrete response from Israeli leaders and have not prompted sustained pressure on the United States to enforce compliance with the terms of the agreement.
