The Office of the Vice President of Malawi has dismissed as false documents circulating on social media that claim to show the budget for a planned trip to the United Kingdom by Vice President Jane Mayemu Ansah.

The Office, in a statement on Tuesday signed by Richard Mveriwa, said the documents were “fake and misleading” and did not originate from any government institution or reflect approved government expenditure.

“The Office of the Vice President would like to inform the general public that the documents currently circulating on social media purporting to show the budget for Her Honour, Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah SC JA (Retired), the Vice President’s official trip to the United Kingdom are fake and misleading,”  the statement said.

It added that the documents “did not originate from any Government institution and do not reflect official records or approved Government expenditures” and urged the public to rely only on information issued through official government channels.

The denial comes after a purported document surfaced online that Ansah was preparing to travel to the UK  to attend her husband’s 80th birthday celebrations with a large entourage at a purported expense of roughly K2.3 billion.

According to the purported document dated 11 December from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Malawi Mission in London, Ansah is scheduled to be in Nottingham from 26 December to 10 January, purportedly on what sources describe as a private visit.

Despite the visit having no state or diplomatic agenda, the alleged document instructs the Malawi High Commission in London to notify British authorities and set up full protocol and logistical support befitting the Office of the Vice President.
