The Olofa of Offa, Oba Muftahu Gbadamosi, has urged residents of the Offa community to remain calm and continue their end-of-year celebrations after an unidentified object fell and damaged parts of three buildings in the town.

An explosion on Thursday night damaged sections of the buildings along the Offa–Ijagbo road and injured about five people, including a couple and their young daughter.

A landlady whose house was affected said the incident happened at about 10 pm after she heard an unusual humming sound, which was followed by the object crashing onto her property.

“I cannot really explain what happened. Something just landed on the ground,” the woman, identified as Victoria Macharty, said.

She explained that officials later recovered the object, describing it as a small box, items resembling metal rims and pieces of iron. She hinted that residents secured the area overnight until local government officials and an anti-bomb unit arrived to collect the debris.

According to her, the explosion damaged the fence, parts of the building and two windows.

Meanwhile, the United States Department of Defence confirmed on Thursday that airstrikes carried out at the request of the Nigerian government killed several ISIS fighters.

US President Donald Trump also announced the strikes, describing them as precise military operations against terrorism.

However, the Olofa of Offa told Channels Television that the community was not deliberately targeted by any military action, either local or foreign.

He said the military was still investigating the incident and appealed to residents not to panic.

He described the explosion as similar to a stray incident and assured the community that Offa was not under attack.

He encouraged residents to celebrate Christmas and the New Year peacefully, stressing that no one in the town was a target.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, later explained that the incident followed joint Nigeria–United States airstrikes on ISIS camps in Sokoto State.

He said 16 GPS-guided precision munitions were deployed using MQ-9 Reaper drones.

According to him, debris from the expended munitions fell in parts of Sokoto State and in Offa, Kwara State, near a hotel.

He confirmed that no civilian casualties were recorded and that security agencies promptly secured the affected areas.
