A Nigerian lawmaker, Ali Ndume, has called on President Bola Tinubu to extend ongoing joint counterterrorism operations with the United States to the country’s northeast, where Islamist militant groups remain active.

Ndume, a senator representing Borno South and a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said fighters from Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram still control key areas in the region.

The Borno South senator, in a statement on Saturday, welcomed recent cooperation between Nigeria and the United States but said the operations should not be limited to the northwest.

“We welcome this cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in targeting terrorist hideouts,” Ndume said.

“I am calling on them to extend it to the Northeast, where ISWAP and Boko Haram have their three known black spots: Lake Chad, Mandara Mountain, and Sambisa, which are exclusive strongholds of ISWAP and Boko Haram.”

The Northeast region comprises Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe states.

Recall that US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that American forces had carried out deadly airstrikes against Islamic State terrorists in Northwestern Nigeria, warning that further attacks would follow if the militants continued killing Christians.

Trump disclosed this on his Truth Social platform, adding that the Department of War had executed numerous perfect strikes.

The strikes come against the backdrop of repeated deadly attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria.
