The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, of being the central figure behind the deepening crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike made the remarks during a media chat with journalists on Monday, December 29, 2025, in Rivers State, where he blamed Makinde’s actions for weakening the party and pushing it towards internal collapse.

“Look at where PDP is today, look at the crisis. Today, PDP has no candidate in Ekiti State. Today, PDP has no candidate in Osun State.

“Now, when you say one-party state, who is making us have a one-party state?

“If you have listened to people and allowed due process to take place, would the issue of a one-party state arise? You are the one who is creating a one-party state, yet you are accusing the government of trying to have a one-party state.”

He added that the accusations against the party were misplaced, saying, “Now, have you taken wrong steps that are destroying your party, you are now accusing the party of wanting to have a one-party state. It doesn’t make sense.”

Wike cited the role of the Board of Trustees (BoT), which he said had attempted to resolve the crisis through a high-powered committee.

“For example, the Board of Trustees set up a committee to say, ‘Look, what do we do?’” he said. “The committee, headed by former Osun State governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former deputy governor and chief of staff to President Jonathan, Mike Oghiadomhe, Senator Zainab Kure, and two others, came up with a report: let’s not go for this convention; let’s set up a caretaker committee.”

However, Wike stated that Makinde rejected the committee’s recommendation.

“The same Seyi, of course went ahead and said the committee was compromised.”

Wike further accused Makinde of disregarding court judgments in his push to hold a disputed party convention.

“There are two judgments of the Federal High Courts, given by Justice Omotosho and Justice Lee. Substantive judgments, not orders,” he said.

He added that Makinde obtained an ex parte order from an Ibadan State High Court to proceed with the convention, despite the earlier rulings.

“How could an ex parte order override the substantive judgment of two courts? Of course, he went ahead with his so-called convention. INEC was not there. INEC refused to recognise them.”

According to Wike, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) later challenged the matter in court and was struck out of the case.

“INEC filed a preliminary objection to say, look, court, you have no jurisdiction here. And the court agreed and struck out INEC’s name. So there was nothing binding on INEC,” he said.

Wike added that Makinde still sought court recognition of the disputed convention, despite earlier rulings.

“The convention that the Federal High Court has said you cannot go ahead with,” he said. “After disobeying the court judgment, you now filed at the Federal High Court in Ibadan to recognise you as the legitimate principal officers.”

Wike concluded by stating that frustration had driven Makinde’s decisions which are still damaging the PDP.

“That’s why I said frustration can make you do a lot of things that will cause damage,” he said.
