Tension in Kano Over Alleged Governor Defection

Political tension has risen in Kano State following reports that Governor Abba Yusuf plans to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move firmly rejected by the party’s leadership and its national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The development has triggered internal friction within the NNPP, especially between supporters of the governor and loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya movement founded by Kwankwaso.

In a statement issued on behalf of the NNPP at both state and national levels, the party said it was aware of the unfolding situation and does not support any defection to the APC.

The NNPP Chairman in Kano State, Hon. Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, said the state chapter, the national leadership and Senator Kwankwaso had collectively rejected the reported move.

He noted that the party had made repeated efforts to persuade those involved to remain patient and stay within the NNPP in the interest of Kano residents.

Dungurawa appealed directly to the governor and others allegedly planning to defect to reconsider their decision, urging them not to abandon the party or align with a political platform the NNPP and its supporters have consistently opposed.

He also dismissed claims that party officials were attempting to set the governor against Senator Kwankwaso, challenging anyone with evidence to present it publicly.

The chairman urged Kano residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities while warning party members against signing documents allegedly circulated by what he described as mischief makers.

Reacting to the situation, the Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, confirmed that disagreements exist within the party but declined to comment on the alleged defection.

He said the NNPP leadership was handling the matter internally and advised the public to avoid speculation.

Dungurawa concluded by calling on Kano residents and Nigerians to continue supporting the NNPP and its national leader as future political engagements approach, noting that the situation could significantly shape the state’s political landscape.
