An Argentine court has dismissed all charges against four professional footballers who had been accused of sexually assaulting a journalist while playing for top-flight club Vélez Sarsfield last year.

The players had been suspended by the Buenos Aires side after the allegations emerged, which centred on an incident said to have taken place in March in the northern city of Tucumán.

The case was brought by a 24-year-old sports journalist who claimed she was raped after being invited to a hotel room by Uruguay international goalkeeper Sebastián Sosa.

She alleged that Paraguayan midfielder José Florentín and Argentine players Braian Cufré and Abiel Osorio were also present when she arrived.

According to her account, she began to feel unwell and dizzy after consuming a small amount of alcohol, lay down on a bed and was subsequently assaulted.

Prosecutors charged Cufré and Florentín with rape, accused Sosa of being an accomplice to the offence, and charged Osorio with sexual abuse.

However, a judge in Tucumán dismissed all charges during a closed hearing on Tuesday. Following the ruling, the complainant told local media that she plans to appeal the decision.

Since leaving Vélez Sarsfield, Sosa has moved to Juventud in Uruguay, while Florentín and Cufré now play for Central Córdoba. Osorio is currently with Defensa y Justicia, also in Argentina.
