Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday said his hope for residents in 2026 is that their hard work will “meet the right opportunities”, as he acknowledged the economic pressure many Lagosians face.

In a New Year message posted on X, Sanwo-Olu praised the resilience of residents, describing Lagos as “a daily test of grit, hope, and determination,” noting that nobody understands Lagos better than Lagosians.

“I see you. I see the traders, the workers and the young people chasing dreams. You carry this state on your shoulders, and you do it with courage,” Sanwo-Olu wrote.

“My hope for every Lagosian this year is that your hard work meets the right opportunities, May your homes be filled with peace, and may your ambitions find the space they need to grow.”

Sanwo-Olu said governing Lagos is ultimately about the people and ensuring that their efforts are not in vain. “It is about ensuring that your hard work is not in vain and that your children have better chances than you did,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu noted that 2026 would require “patience and cooperation from all of us,” as well as “honesty about what is not working and the courage to fix it.”

He pledged to listen more closely and stay focused on the everyday lives of Lagosians.

“I am committed to listening more closely, acting more decisively, and staying focused on what matters most, the everyday lives of Lagosians.”

Acknowledging economic hardship, the governor said, “I know many of you feel the weight of the economy, and I see the daily hustle it takes to keep going.” He added that while “the challenges we face are real,” they “are not permanent.”

He said the state government is focused on strengthening long-term foundations so that “the next generation inherits a state that truly works for them.”

Sanwo-Olu urged residents to be “kinder to one another, stay focused on our goals, and keep moving this great state forward together.”
