Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect, citing the need for a new political platform aligned with his leadership goals.
Mutfwang’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 29, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. The letter was acknowledged by ward officials on December 30.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the PDP with immediate effect,” the governor said in the letter.
He thanked the party for giving him the opportunity to participate in the democratic process and expressed appreciation to party leaders, members, and supporters at all levels for their support during his time in the PDP.
“I sincerely appreciate the PDP for providing me the political platform to participate in the democratic process,” Mutfwang said.
“I acknowledge the support of party leaders, members, and supporters at all levels during my time in the party, and I remain grateful for the trust reposed in me.”
Explaining his decision, the governor said it was informed by “the realities of the moment” and his commitment to “purposeful leadership, clarity of direction, and service delivery,” which he said had compelled him to seek an alternative political platform.
“Given the realities of the moment and guided by my commitment to purposeful leadership, clarity of direction, and service delivery. I am compelled to seek an alternative political platform.”
The letter, however, did not indicate which political party Mutfwang intends to join.
Mutfwang, a lawyer by training, was elected governor of Plateau State on the PDP platform. His resignation comes days after former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
