The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Miller Dantawaye, has warned residents—particularly women—against accepting free rides from strangers as part of efforts to curb crime in Abuja.
Dantawaye issued the warning on Friday while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association, including members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, the NBA Women Forum, and the Unity Bar, at the FCT Police Command headquarters.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the police boss urged residents to remain security-conscious, especially when using commercial vehicles.
He advised women to carefully assess the vehicles they board and to avoid unsolicited lifts from unknown persons.

He stressed that public vigilance, timely information sharing, and collective responsibility remain vital to preventing and dismantling ‘one-chance’ criminal operations across the Federal Capital Territory.
During the visit, Dantawaye expressed condolences over the killing of NBA staff member Ms Princess Ochigbo and assured the delegation that the command had launched thorough and discreet investigations to track down those responsible.
According to reports, Ochigbo’s body was discovered on the Kubwa Expressway on Tuesday, while her bag, containing her identity card and other personal belongings, was found nearby.
Documents suggested she worked at the FCT High Court, prompting detectives to open an investigation.
The warning follows closely on the killing of a nurse, Chinemerem Chuwumeziem, at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, an incident that sparked outrage and condemnation from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, FCT Council.
